About the Cathedral Singers

The Cathedral Singers was formed in 1978 to sing the daily services in the Cathedral as invited by the Dean and Chapter when the Cathedral Choir is not in residence. This is usually about 100 services a year. The choir is drawn from a rota of adult members (aged seventeen and above) who live in and around Oxford. When in residence, the choir meets to rehearse at 5.00 pm for a service at 6.00 pm. Although nearly all of the singers are amateur musicians, and come from all walks of life, the musical standard is excellent. Its repertoire extends from Renaissance polyphony to twentieth century composers and the choir has released two CDs. The earlier release can be bought online at Classical Recording. The Singers also perform concerts in Oxford and beyond, and often undertake a summer tour. Recent tours include:
Canada
Scotland
Franconia, Germany
Czech Republic
Worcester
Minnesota, USA
Ripon
New York and New England
Paris and Truro Cathedral
Portugal
Dublin
Germany

The Cathedral Singers work under the oversight of the Music Sub-Committee of the Dean and Chapter. Day to day responsibilities are delegated to the Cathedral Singers' Committee, which meets approximately six times a year. The Precentor chairs the Cathedral Singers' Committee, or in his absence, the Director of Music. Other members are the Treasurer of the Singers, the Administrators, and two choir representatives. If you are interested in auditioning for the Cathedral Singers, then please contact the Director of Music, John Padley.
